The 68× gap in frontier AI pricing

Hey Reader,

44 cents versus $30.

That is the provider-list cost gap for the same one-million-token mix: DeepSeek V4 Flash off-peak versus Claude Fable 5 standard uncached. It is not the same measured outcome or service conditions.

If DeepSeek clears the bar, what did the other $29.56 buy?

As of August 22, 2026, one Standard Shift costs:

  • DeepSeek V4 Flash: $0.88 peak / $0.44 off-peak with cache-miss input. Released weights.
  • Gemini 3.7 Flash: $2.25 at Google's introductory rate through December 31, 2026.
  • GLM-5.3: $2.90 with standard input.
  • Kimi K3: $9 cache miss / $7.65 cache hit. Released weights.
  • GPT-5.6 Sol: $12 promotional short-context pricing, available at least through November 21, 2026.
  • Claude Fable 5: $30 standard uncached.

My read: China is turning frontier intelligence into a price war. That does not prove China caused every American price cut.

I think Fable 5 is stronger overall than DeepSeek V4 Flash. That is my judgment, not a benchmark. I have not tested all six on one controlled job.

Most everyday work may not reward 68×. Use the right model for the job. Pay for strength when the work exposes it. Otherwise, use the cheapest model that clears the bar.

A Standard Shift models one million active-work tokens, split 50/50 input/output over a workday. It is a provider-list comparison, not eight hours online, equal quality, a cYpher.camp refill price, or an exact customer charge. Context, caching, tools, tier, and length change costs.

Released weights means downloadable and self-hostable subject to license, not unrestricted ownership or cheap deployment. Kimi uses a custom license. One team reported full Kimi K3 at 20 tokens/second on 80 RTX 5090 GPUs before tuning. At a reported $3,700 retail point, that is about $296,000 for GPUs, before servers, networking, power, and cooling.

That is why cYpher.camp is built around durable jobs, not models. Your AI Hire keeps its job and context as engines change. Engines depend on your plan and AI Hire type. A human should approve consequential work.

Model loyalty is expensive.

Reply with TEST: and one non-sensitive sample task, like comparing public product pages. I'll pick one and run it across all six with the same inputs and scoring bar.
